The Daytime Partnership:
For Stoke on Trent Crime Initiative Member Businesses
Presentations
If our members are to contribute effectively to the Partnership, it is essential that they understand what we do with their information. Regular presentations are given to the staff of both new and existing members in order to showcase the Crime Initiative’s work and encourage a sense of ownership.
Visits are also regularly paid to the CCTV control room, providing members with a greater understanding of the role of the operators and encouraging a partnership approach.
Intelligence Meetings
Weekly Security Briefings allow up to date intelligence to be disseminated to businesses. Full Intelligence Meetings are held on a monthly basis across the City Centre, Longton, Tunstall and Stoke, identifying active offenders and current trends. Businesses are encouraged to attend and the top three priorities of members are agreed at these meetings and subsequent action is taken.
Exclusions
Once repeat offenders have been identified, they are issued with a 12-month exclusion from all members’ premises. A photograph album is then issued to the businesses, complying with data protection legislation, picturing each of those excluded. This helps members identify offenders and to prevent crime from occurring in their business.
Training
The partnership provides a range of training courses free of charge as a benefit of membership.
Examples Include:- Powers of Arrest
- Awareness
- Radio Use
- Conflict Management
- Statement Writing - encouraging a more professional approach to evidence giving.
- And more...
Case Study – The Bus Station Gang
In 2007, a group of young individuals were regularly causing serious problems for the businesses around the City Centre Bus Station. In order to tackle the problem, the Crime Initiative encouraged members to record and report every piece of intelligence available about this group. Over 1,000 incidents of verbal abuse were submitted.
This resulted in the application of 15 anti-social behaviour orders against these individuals. The problem in that particular area and throughout the City Centre was dramatically reduced once the ringleaders had been dealt with. This demonstrates the success of the intelligence-led system.
